1944 Jefferson five-cent coins don’t leave much for coin collectors to get excited about, as there were no significant errors or varieties that year to report. However, the common array of 1944 Jefferson nickels means you can take an easy walk through the year as a coin collector and acquire the complete set of three (P, D, and S mintmarks) for a highly affordable cost and relatively little effort, as 1944 Jeffersons are easily obtainable in virtually any circulated or lower-level uncirculated grade you want.

Here’s a glance of the mintages and values of 1944 Jefferson nickels:

  • 1944-P, 119,150,000; $2.75

  • 1944-D, 32,309,000; $2.75

  • 1944-S, 21,640,000; $2.75

*Values are for coins in Very Fine-20 condition.

If you’re collecting a circulated date-and-mintmark set of Jefferson nickels, there’s no reason to go crazy and buy the “wartime nickels” in uncirculated grades, even though they aren’t generally that expensive. If, however, you would like a higher-grade set of nickels, or perhaps you’re collecting a short set of 1942-45 silver five-cent coins, then 1944 five-cent coins should pose little financial burden to you as they are extremely affordable in Mint State grades, with a price of under $10 each for Mint State-60 specimens.

Mint Mark: S
Face Value: 0.05 USD
Total Produced: 104,060,000 [?]
Silver Content: 35%
Silver Weight: 0.0563 oz.
Silver Melt: $1.53
Value: As a rough estimate of this coins value you can assume this coin in average condition will be valued at somewhere around $2.2, while one in certified mint state (MS+) condition could bring as much as $65 at auction. This price does not reference any standard coin grading scale. So when we say average, we mean in a similar condition to other coins issued in 1943, and mint state meaning it is certified MS+ by one of the top coin grading companies. [?].

Additional Info: Wartime nickels were issued in 35% silver from 1942-1945 as Nickel was a resource needed for the World War II. These Nickels are usually ugly and grimy but a great way to stock up on silver at near spot or under.

Numismatic vs Intrinsic Value:This coin in poor condition is still worth $0.67 more than the intrinsic value from silver content of $1.53, this coin is thus more valuable to a collector than to a silver bug. Coins worth more to a collectors may be a better long term investment. If the metal prices drop you will still have a coin that a numismatic would want to buy.
